An herb garden can be as large or as small as you’d like. Check out these 5 popular and easy herb garden ideas to spice up your outdoor living space (or kitchen!).

Herbs in Mason Jars

One of the current trends in home decorating is repurposing old mason jars. They’re quick, simple, and usually, you have a few collecting dust in a basement somewhere.

What You Need
  • Wooden Board
  • Mason Jars
  • Pipe Clamps
  • Triangle Ring Hangers
  • Stainless Hanging Wire
  • Picture Hanger
  • Hammer, nails & screwdriver
  • Herbs, of course

Step 1: Place your mason jars evenly on a wood board, ensuring that they are spaced evenly. Mark their placement with a pencil.

Step 2:  Secure pipe clamps to the wooden board.

Step 3: Nail in ring hangers to the back of the board and tie on the hanging wire.

Step 4: Place your mason jars into the pipe clamps and tighten with the screwdriver.

Step 5: Hang your herb garden in ample sunlight in your kitchen or year-round sunroom!

Herbs in mason jars can be as simple as you’d like. You can skip the wooden board altogether. Just plant your herbs and decoratively place the mason jars around your outdoor living space. You can paint and label everything, or even replace the mason jars with any other glass container!

A hanging shoe rack is a low-cost option that doesn’t take up a lot of space.

What You Need
  • Hanging pocket organizer/shoe organizer
  • Curtain Pole, the width of your pocket organizer
  • Utensil hanging hooks
  • A piece of wood 2”x2” the width of your pocket organizer to keep the base of the pockets from touching the wall.

Step 1: Attach your pole to your shed or wall ensuring that it is high enough that it’s not hanging to the ground.

Step 2:  Using your utensil hanging hooks, attach the pocket organizer.

Step 3: Pour water into each pocket to ensure that it drains. If there is no drainage, make a few small holes in each pocket.

Step 4: Plant your herbs!

Anything Can Be a Planter!

Expand your home decorating skills into your outdoor living spaces. Your home shows the world who you are and shows what you like, so let that personality spill over outside as well. Turn an old wheelbarrow, or a wagon, or even tea cups into your next planter! This is where you can get creative and let your originality shine. The options are endless.

Bonus Tips For Growing Herbs!
  • Herbs need 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • To prevent root-rot, make sure that your herbs have proper drainage.
  • Larger leaves are the plant’s energy providers, make sure to cut a mix of mature and brand new leaves and avoid cutting off all the leaves at once.
  • Alberta can have some weather mood swings. It may be easier to start off by growing your herbs indoors and then transplant them outside during warmer weather. Anything Grows Alberta can provide an estimated guide as to when each herb should be planted.
